Homework & learning updates
This is exam week. The exam schedule can be viewed here: In ELA, students will NOT be taking an exam. They will instead earn an exam grade by completing a writing portfolio. Please take the time to view the guidelines and rubric for the writing portfolio below.
An example of a digital portfolio can be found here. If a student wishes to create a digital portfolio rather than a hard copy, they may use Google Sites to create it. They or their parent will need to have or sign up for a Google account in order to do this, and I will need a written confirmation from the parent/guardian letting me know that it is OK for the child to use the internet in this way. If a student wishes to create a hard copy instead, that is perfectly acceptable. It is what most students will be doing.
Homework: Monday - Complete a CSR chart for chapter eleven of Harriet Tubman. Suggested chunking of pages: Chunk 1 - Pp.102 - 103 Chunk 2 - Pp. 104 - 105 Chunk 3 - P.106 Chunk 4 - Pp.107 - 108 Chunk 5 - Pp.109 - 113 Chunk 6 - Pp.114 - 115 Tuesday - Finish the essay that we started today in class: Describe Tubman’s tone at the beginning of chapter eleven when she says, “There was no one to welcome me to the land of the free. I was a stranger in a strange land, and my home after all was down in the old cabin quarter with the old folks, and my brothers and sisters.” How does this tone eventually contribute to her actions as a “Moses of the Underground Railroad?” Wednesday - Second block only - Finish using the process outlined here to revise and rewrite a narrative piece of writing. Have a family member read, make suggestions on, and sign your paper. Thursday - First block only - Finish using the process outlined here to revise and rewrite a narrative piece of writing. Have a family member read, make suggestions on, and sign your paper. We will have a test on Wednesday. Students will be writing an essay comparing and contrasting the authors' purposes for writing three different pieces of writing.
Homework Monday - None! Tuesday - Purposes for writing handout Wednesday - Read ch.8 of Harriet Tubman and create a CSR chart. Thursday - Read ch.9 of Harriet Tubman and create a CSR chart. Over the past two weeks, students had the chance to familiarize themselves with the life and poems of Robert Frost during their warm-up time. This week, we will be focusing on Emily Dickinson and some of her poetry, with a focus on "Hope Is the Thing with Feathers." If you are interested in learning more about Emily Dickinson this is a great resource! We are continuing our reading of Harriet Tubman. Most of this reading is being done collaborative strategic reading (CSR) groups with other students and independently at home. Students should be focusing on figuring out the "clunks" - words or sentences that they don't understand - in order to become better readers. Students are also working on creating a persuasive presentation and research paper about controversial topics of the students' choosing. Presentations are this Friday! We will go to the library on Tuesday, so if students have a book to return or a library debt to pay, that's a great day to bring it! Homework Monday - 1st block: Finish writing the answers to the questions at the top of the George Washington packet. The third questions should be answered in AEC format, 2nd block: Fill in the CSR chart that we created in class for chapter seven of Harriet Tubman. Tuesday - Students will receive the last test that they took. They will rewrite their constructed response using the RADAR revision sheet that will come home with them. This is a great way to make meaningful revisions to a piece of writing. Wednesday - Students will finish the rough draft of their persuasive essay. (They outlined and began their rough drafts in class). Thursday - TSW finish the final drafts of their essays (began in class). |
