Homework & learning updates
Homework: ***Important change to Thursday night's homework! Students should use SpringBoard to complete their Socratic Seminar questions! They will be participating in a Socratic Seminar tomorrow, and will receive points for participating in this collaborative discussion using the questions that they finish tonight. Please make sure that the SpringBoard book returns to school tomorrow!*** Information about Socratic Seminars can be found here: http://www.paideia.org/about-paideia/socratic-seminar/ Monday: Finish today's evidence & figurative language packet. Students had all class period to work on this, as I was out for jury duty (my last day!), and should therefore have very little to complete at home. All of the material in the packet has been covered previously in class. Tuesday - Wednesday: Each night, students should read for AT LEAST twenty minutes, and fill in their reading log.

Parents: I will be out of the building on Monday and Wednesday of this week for jury duty. Unfortunately this is not something that can be changed, so please remind your student to be on his or her best behavior. I was out one day of last week for the same reason, and I received mixed reports on student behavior. Monday - Students will need to read, annotate, and summarize the article passed out in class (Archaeologists Hit a Homer Run). Tuesday - Students should answer the multiple choice questions (on the back of last night's HW) and justify, in writing, each answer. They do not answer question #5 yet. Wednesday - Answer question #5. The answer should be in the form of an assertion (restate and answer the question in such a way that anyone would know what is being talked about, even if they haven't seen the question or read the article). Thursday - Figurative language: Write down two examples of similes, two examples of metaphors, and two examples of personification. Friday - No Homework. We have begun to review last year's learning about figurative language as we read short stories in SpringBoard. I play this video for students in class periodically, and it is a fun review for at home, too. Please note that I am not the creator of this video, so the spelling and punctuation errors are out of my control. As an English teacher, this drives me a little bit crazy, but I believe that the song makes it worth the viewing. As students finish reading The Lightning Thief, they should return it to the library and check out The Westing Game. This is their independent reading book, but students should also have their own self-selected book that they are reading outside of class.
Monday - Sequence of events handout
Tuesday - Context clues practice handout Wednesday - Read and annotate article about Pandora Thursday - Using the Pandora article, write an AEC paragraph answering the prompt: How does the author create an effective opening? Friday - No homework. Students should be reading The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. Those who have finished should be reading The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin. Both books are available for checkout in the school library. All students should be reading an additional independent reading book of their own choosing at all times. |
