Homework & learning updates
We are working on writing personal narratives and using apostrophes correctly this week. Students should continue to read The Lightning Thief and shoot for being finished with chapter nine by the end of the week. We will visit the school library on Friday, so students will have the opportunity to choose independent reading books that interest them.
Homework Monday - List the following for The Lightning Thief: Characters, setting, sequence of events leading up to where you are in the book, and the main conflict. Tuesday - Annotate the D’aulaire’s myth using gist statements and the marks learned in class. Wednesday - Narrative writing prompt on p.25 of Springboard on loose leaf Thursday - AEC paragraph: How is Annabeth characterized in The Lightning Thief? This week we will begin to work in our SpringBoard textbooks. When these books are not needed for homework, they will be kept in the classroom to avoid any of them getting lost. Tuesday is picture day and SRI day. The SRI is the reading progress test that students take three times per year. It is computer-based, and all students will have ample time to complete it.
Homework Monday - Record three observations as you read The Lightning Thief: 1 literal, 1 critical, & 1 inferential. If you are struggling with this, use the info. sheet on the other side of your homework and last week's blog post to help you. Tuesday - Same as Monday. (Three more thoughts). Wednesday - Finish your reader's autobiography. Thursday - Proofread the rough draft of your Reader's Autobiography. Friday - Complete the final draft of your Reader’s Autobiography and have a parent/guardian fill out the edits sheet. This week is a skill-building week, meaning that students will be introduced to a number of skills that they will need to master over the course of the year. In addition to learning how to write an AEC paragraph, students will learn how to take literal, critical, and inferential (LCI) notes while reading, and they will understand how to complete a collaborative strategic reading (CSR) log in order to better understand a chunk of text.
Homework Monday - Students should practice writing assertions by answering the three questions that we wrote down in class. Assertion = Restate & answer. Tuesday - Students should use the LCI log to take literal, critical, & inferential notes on The Lightning Thief. More info: The three types of thinking are
Wednesday - Students should read the Snapchat article & complete the CSR learning log. Thursday - Students should complete the "Breaking Down Prompts" handout. Welcome to sixth grade! We're going to accomplish a lot this year. In the first week of school, students will be absorbing a lot of new information, and they may feel overwhelmed at times. Please reach out to me if you have any concerns about your child's learning.
Homework Monday - No school. Tuesday - Students should complete both sides of the "Get to Know Me" survey. Wednesday - Students should complete the "Goal Setting" handout. Thursday - Use the proofreading marks that we learned in class today to edit and rewrite a short paragraph. The proofreading marks can be found below. |
