Homework & learning updates
Monday - AEC paragraph: What is the theme of The Lightning Thief? Help with AEC can be found here.
Tuesday - Finish reading and annotating "In the Beginning and Pandora's Box" in SpringBoard. Annotating means to break the text into chunks and write a gist statement for each chunk. A gist statement is a summary of the chunk in ten words or less. Annotating also means circling the "clunks" or words/sentences that students don't understand. Wednesday - Finish writing the commentary for the AEC paragraph we wrote together in class on p.67. Explain why what we already wrote matters, then restate the assertion using different words. 2 - 3 sentences. Thursday - Test corrections: Students should write justifications for the correct multiple choice answers for THE PROBLEMS THEY MISSED ONLY. Students should rewrite the written portion of the exam for grade recovery. Due Monday. This is optional for students who scored a 12 or higher on the writing portion. Monday - No homework.
Tuesday - Test corrections - Students who scored a ten or lower on the writing portion will need to rewrite it. All students have been given the correct multiple choice answers and should write justifications for the ones that they missed telling why they are the correct answers. This is due on Thursday. Wednesday - Finish yesterday's test corrections. Thursday - Answer Socratic Seminar questions, due on Monday. Friday - Finish the Socratic Seminar questions and finish The Lightning Thief if you have not already done so. This week, students will be focused on writing a personal narrative about an incident that caused their lives to change. The rough draft will be coming home on Tuesday, and the final draft should be finished Wednesday evening. Please make an effort to read your child's work and have a conversation with him or her about the strengths and weaknesses that you notice.
Homework Monday - Students should create a memory map using the instructions on p.35 of SpringBoard. This was reviewed extensively in class. Tuesday - Students should finish the rough drafts of their personal narratives. Wednesday - Students should finish the final drafts of their personal narratives. Thursday - Finish any part of the LCI log for The Lightning Thief that you have not already finished. Students have had all week with some time allowed in class to work on this. Friday - Students should have read through chapter seventeen of The Lightning Thief by Monday. This week students will be learning how to participate in Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) group in class. If you would like to read about what CSR is and how it is used in the classroom, click here. We are also working hard on writing in AEC format. Refer to my "How to Write an AEC Paragraph" packet on my classroom resources page for more information.
Tuesday - Read and annotate “The Jacket” on pp.26 - 28 of SpringBoard. Annotate means to break the text into chunks, circle the clunks (the words that you don't know), and write gist statements (summaries in ten words or less. The idea is to focus on the most important idea in a chunk, not every detail). In SpringBoard, chunks will typically be each paragraph. In other reading, a chunk could be as long as a couple of pages. We have practiced this a good deal in class and previous homework assignments, so all students should be familiar enough with the process to do it independently. Wednesday - Complete the graphic organizer on p.29 of SpringBoard. Thursday - Complete p. 34 in SpringBoard. |
